I’ve found myself stuck in a bit of a rut with my wardrobe lately. I’m stuck in this cycle where I’ll buy a few new clothing pieces, get excited about them and have fun wearing/styling them, and then feel like I get…bored, I guess, with my other clothing items. The ones that I’ve had for long enough that the new-ness excitement of them has faded. And with these new pieces, I just keep styling them the same way, or simply wearing them as-is, which leads me to feel “bored” with them too. Has anyone else ever felt this way?
This blog post was inspired by this rut – and also by people I follow on social media! I follow a few fashion accounts on instagram, and I am always in awe of their creativity with styling and layering simple pieces of clothing to create unique outfits. I realized this is what I need to try in order to stop feeling bored with my clothes. I want to start looking at the potential of each item of clothing, and how it could transform an outfit.
So, this blog post is a challenge for myself to finally experiment with different ways to style a basic piece – a simple white turtleneck!
Easy-peasy

I know this look isn’t groundbreaking, but I didn’t want to leave out the option of just wearing a piece in a simplistic way! Sometimes a nice and casual look is exactly what you need for your day. Since this is a tighter-fitting shirt, I’d recommend tucking it in to your jeans for a more put-together look.
Add a little texture

Layering a camisole over your turtleneck is a great way to add some texture to your outfit without feeling like your outfit is too out-there. I paired white on white to keep it more subtle, but you could add more depth by layering a black camisole, or even a brightly coloured one, over your turtleneck!
Summer, but for fall

Unless you live somewhere that doesn’t get very cold this time of year, I’d recommend saving this option for spring. I’ve been looking at this romper in my closet a lot lately, thinking about how much I like it and wish I had worn it more in the summer. Now, if I want to wear it around the house (because it’s a bit too cold to wear outside) I can do so by layering my turtleneck underneath, and putting on a pair of tights as well!
Disney Princess-inspired…ish?

Okay, maybe this isn’t really Disney princess-esque, but I feel like ever since I first saw Belle from Beauty and the Beast, I loved the neckline of her dress layered over her shirt. When I was looking through my clothes thinking of ways I could style this turtleneck, I realized that my bodysuit had a similar neckline, so I layered my bodysuit over this basic, and threw on a flowy skirt to try and replicate the look as best I could!
How would you style a basic piece to make it more interesting?
Until next time,
Nadine
